It’s really beautiful. The opal isn’t a doublet, is it?

@vixbux Hi Victoria! I'm so sorry for the delay. I'm sleep-deprived and trying to meet an end of semester deadline. I'd like to be really transparent about what I know and what I don't, so you can make an informed decision. At the end of the day it's most important to me that people feel treated fairly. So the first thing is that I'm not a professional jeweler, and don't specialize in opals. From what I understand, a doublet
sac80
or triplet should show lines on the side, which are usually covered by the setting (to hide the sides, and prevent people from knowing what they are buying). The back of doublets (again, from what I've read) are usually black. It seems that triplets are easy to identify, but even specialists can have trouble identifying doublets.

(sorry, 500 word limit is a pain - hence the many posts). The good news is that you can see the side and back of this stone, so nothing is hidden. The side of the stone has no lines, and the back is nearly white with opal flecks (not black as is typical in doublets), but not as elegant as the front. I don't believe this is a doublet, but having just done some reading, I suspect it may be lab-created.

I should also mention that I was dumb enough to place this ring in a small box with a sapphire ring (had been super sleepy due to a prescription medication that was not a good fit - usually I'm hyper careful about these things), so the back of the stone has a scratch in it. I really apologize! More info: I purchased this from a woman who purchased this second hand on an estate site, so I don't have detailed background on who made this ring.
sac80
I'm scrambling with my work that's due, and this ring is super hard to photograph, but I'm happy to try to get some detailed close-ups of the side and back of the stone tomorrow so that you can see exactly what to expect.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you need to in order to make an informed decision. I also found this site, which seems to have some useful information. https://www.opalsdownunder.com.au/learn-about-opals/intermediate/how-tell-if-opal-real

One last thing - given the scratch on the back, and the fact that I don't have papers and documentation for this ring, flexibility in price seems fair to you and other buyers. I'm not someone who gets angry for offers - if you do decide you are interested, offer what you are comfortable with.

USPS Priority has been a hot mess in my neighborhood recently (dependable but SLOW) but if you need it by Christmas, I can include free UPS or Fedex, or free Priority Express upgrade (this is the only USPS with guaranteed arrival date).

Whew! Long posts. Goodnight! And no pressure either way - have a lovely holiday!
vixbux
@sac80 Thank you so very much for the information on the ring. I truly appreciate it. I’ve already destroyed two opal doubles by forgetting to take them off when swimming and washing my hands 😩 I adore your ring, but I just can’t risk it again.
vixbux
Doublets, not doubles.
sac80
@vixbux I hear you - no worries! Good luck finding a piece that works for you!!
vixbux
@sac80 you’re so gracious, thank you!
sac80
@vixbux Of course, no problem!! I'm not on Posh to make people miserable - and it's the holiday season after all :)
vixbux
@sac80 😊You are a gem. Merry Christmas!
sac80
@vixbux Aw, thank you!! Merry Christmas to you too!
haley_banks
@sac80 hello! Can you post a pic of it on a hand so I can judge size? I’m interested!
sac80
@haley_banks Of course! Just a few moments. Hopefully I can get a decent photo; light is so dim this time of day! Happy to post some measurements or shots with a quilting square as well, since my hands are small.
vixbux
@sac80 And it’s a sharp learning curve for sure! ☹️
sac80
@vixbux It sure is! I decided to take a break from acquiring jewelry (esp. since I recently became allergic to almost al metals) and focus on my music and sewing. Happy New Year!
vixbux
@sac80 Too bad about the allergic reaction. Maybe that’s what I need to keep me from ogling at jools!
sac80
@vixbux Lol rashes? I can't recommend them haha! Will have to sell almost everything though. Might try to coat a few of my vintage rhinestones if I can find something safe. Lovvve rhinestones... and it's all Marilyn Monroe's fault. Love that lady.
vixbux
@sac80 Who doesn’t love MM? And I adore rhinestones too!
sac80
@vixbux I don't know, I hope everyone loves her! :) I am bummed that she was cast as "dumb" in so many of her movies. That must have been hard.
vixbux
@sac80 Amen to that!
taffyaleas
Could this ring be resized to a 7.5 or 8? Can you post pic of this ring on finger? Thanks!
sac80
@taffyaleas Thanks for your message! There's a limit on 8 pics per listing so I made another listing with photos with me wearing it, and with a quilting square for scale. I'm double checking guidelines for resizing and will post ASAP - I want to make sure to give you accurate information.
sac80
@taffyaleas I couldn't figure out how to share that listing to your dressing room so I tagged you and wrote - you should be able to click on your "News" link on Posh to see my other comments.

sac80
@taffyaleas Hi Taffy, the good news is that yellow gold is one of the easiest to resize. Apparently it's not possible to resize titanium, tungsten, or some other unusual metals. Most guides I'm seeing say up or down 2 sizes is generally the max. You can expect that this may need some special treatment because opals are heat sensitive.
sac80
@taffyaleas These are not channel set, so that will not pose a problem. It is better to request that they add more gold, though it's more expensive, then stretching existing gold, which will make it weak. I don't necessarily recommend or not recommend these companies, as I have never worked with them.
Have a local jeweler evaluate what size is best for you before you have the sizing done.

@taffyaleas Feel free to write if you have any more questions. There is no pressure to purchase, even if you have a lot of questions! Shopping should be fun and stress-free :) Happy New Year!
taffyaleas
@sac80 thanks so much.

@taffyaleas No problem!
