This beautiful cameo brooch comes from the estate of a lady who was over 100 years old, and had immigrated from Germany. The cameo depicts the Roman goddess Pomona. Pomona is a very rare subject for cameos. She is always illustrated with flowers and fruits in her hair because she was the Goddess of Abundance, and she was over all the orchards and gardens. Perfect for the lady who loves to garden.
The cameo dates to the early 1800s. Early cameos were always carved with a strong Roman nose (like this one) until the 1850s, when artists started making their subjects' noses more feminine. This cameo is also rare because the goddess faces to the left. Almost all cameos face to the right.
The gold setting is still bright. I do not know the gold content. There are a few spots on the gold from the soldering. It has a C type clasp, which also indicates the pin is early 1800s. The pin is still straight and has a sharp point. The piece has a loop at the top so it can be worn as a pendant.
