1880s PT Barnum Jumbo the Elephant promotional water jug Majolica glaze. RARE

The reason we use the word Jumbo in the English language is because of this elephant. Jumbo the Elephant was the first international animal celebrity. Known for his size he was also a gentle giant and beloved by school children. This water jug is promotional ware. It features Jumbo the elephant and a circus trainer with him. Jumbo is gray, the majority of the exterior is yellow, interior is pink. The entire jug is coated in a beautiful Majolica glaze. There are a few flaws seen in pictures. A few lip chips and a closed crack near the handle. There are a few dark spots on the interior pink glaze. I did not attempt to clean them up but I feel like it’s possible the spots could be lightened. This beautiful piece is extremely light and delicate. Given it’s age and purpose it is in very good condition. A remarkable piece of history. We have only seen one other and it was in the PT Barnum Museum.
