Antique 1920's pressed lavender sachet from Yardley of London. Yardley is one of the world's oldest cosmetic companies having been founded in England before 1770.
English Lavender was Yardley’s signature brand and was launched in 1873, using fresh lavender grown in the south of England which flourishes there due to the area's ideal dry, chalky and alkaline soil. This scent first became popular in Victorian England and by the 1880s it was being exported to America with great success.
These were used to scent a lady's linen chest, lingerie, handkerchiefs, or other clothing as the sachets could be either hung or tucked easily into a drawer.
This is a bar of compressed English Lavender in its own little natural linen bag that has a vintage image of woman lavender gatherer with two young children silk-screened on the front with a tiny light blue satin ribbon closure.
Measures about 2-1/4" x 1-1/2" x 1/4"
Though unmarked, this antique set is believed to date back to the early 1920s.
This is a fantastic piece of perfumery history and would be a great addition to a retro boudoir or gift for someone who is an aromatherapy fan.
