ANTIQUE FRENCH SHELF CLOCK - STINGRAY OVER WOOD CASE - BONE MOLDING & FEET Choice example of elegant Art Deco design, craftsmanship and exotic materials
From my personal collection of antique & vintage clocks is this iconic example of high end French Deco era timekeeping. Stingray skins were reserved for use with the most costly of furniture and small decorative objects. Unlike mass-produced clock cases, shagreen veneered examples were custom fabricated on order from the client. The well proportioned arch top case houses a flawless fired enamel dial, finely shaped and blued steel hands, and brass bezel with beveled crystal. Key wound 8-day movement with jeweled cylinder escapement platform - lion passant trademark of Duverdrey & Bloquel clockmakers.
Complete with the (oft-missing) brass rear case cover and desirable of-the-period French double end key. The large end winds the mainspring while the small end fits a squared central post used to set the time. Related French shagreen shelf clocks can be viewed at the 1stdibs,Gavin Douglas Fine Antiques Ltd., Mark Goodger and other UK and French merchant sites. Prices exceeding $2,000 are typical for better examples.
NOTE: The clock is running and holding time. However, I've not serviced the movement & cannot guarantee ongoing operation. Upon request, complete overhaul of the movement will be undertaken. Optional restoration is unrelated to purchase of the clock.
