This Dramatic Evening Gown from the 1930's features pagoda sleeves, a huge butterfly collar, amazing pattern cutting and piecing to create the unusual shaping - see the back view featuring an immense oval cutout and a pointed triangle waistline to which the skirt is sewn. Extensive top stitching stiffens the sleeves and collar helping them stand out. The bodice is empire waisted and fitted through the torso in front but extends into the skirt which is straight and flat in the front and full and billowing in the back. 26 massive faceted glass and metal jeweled buttons - each one made like an expensive piece of costume jewelry -
extend down the front of the dress with working fabric button loops. 2 more of these immense jeweled buttons decorate the incredible pagoda sleeves. There are 28 jeweled buttons altogether.
The fabric in the dress is a beautiful amber & spice 2 color silk brocade featuring a scroll & flower pattern that looks French to me. I am in the process of researching this fabric further. There are no labels in the dress. It was found in London.
There is some watermarking on the silk but it is hidden by the brocade print and the folds in the skirt. Structurally the dress is very sound. All seems are in tact. I have not attempted to clean it because I do not think it is worth the risk to the fabric when the dress is clean enough to wear as is.
The size is XS - S. Fits: Bust 36”, Waist 25”, Hips 37” with room for comfortable movement.
