This is a very special quilt for several reasons. First, it’s double sided with one side likely meant for summer and the other for winter. It’s improvisational- the maker did not have a specific pattern in mind and created it using fabrics at hand, many of which are from feed and flour sacks. The fabrics were sewn together in strips and these kinds of quilts are called Strip Quilts. It is hand tied instead of held together with quilting stitches. The variety of fabrics and colors is wonderful. It’s in very good condition with no tears or fraying. On the winter side there are a couple of light spots. It measures 62” x 77” and is shown on a full size bed.
Sourced in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina.
