This is a gorgeous black straw tilt hat from the 1940s'! The short crown is indented at the back and is surrounded b y an upturned brim. The front of the brim is adorned with beautiful white fabric flowers, and has shiny black bows at each side.the veiling covers the floors, but does not extend over the face. There is an elastic band attached to the inside to keep the hat in place. The hat is to be worn on top of the head and tilted to one side, so size is not important.
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. 30s Fashion certainly seemed fussier than the 1920s with its relentless ornaments of bows, trims and frills.
Label: NEW YORK CREATION - ADJUSTABLE
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City & the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous & wanted to support the New York Creation label & keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue.
This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.
