1940's Elgin American Compact Chicago Motor Club Honor Member Cosmetic Powder Compact
This is an awesome vintage gold tone compact signed Elgin American from the 50's. The club likely provided these to spouses (hence the "honor member") and this one is a beauty. The compact is elegant looking in its design as well as with the added logo on the front. I can only image that day in the mid century when this member received her reward, all decked out in 50's fashion, those were the days!
Measurements:
2 3/4" L x 2 3/4" W x 5/16" D

Good vintage condition with some small pitting on front of compact. Emblem has small enameling loss on star. Small scratches and signs of wear on sides and underside of compact. Mirror in good shape. Please see all photos.
About the Chicago Motor Club:
At the start of the 1900s, excitement was high and motorists began to organize "motor clubs." The clubs would plan races, discuss new models, and generally fraternize. But the Chicago Motor Club was less of a social group. They advocated for both automobile ownership and safer road conditions and better traffic flow. They had an impact on how Chicago planned and improved its central business district... such as widening of streets, more restricted parking, and traffic control signals.
