In the late 1960s the cooperative, Mountain Artisans was started by a worker in the arts & crafts department of the West Virginia Department of Commerce, Florette Angel. Between 1968 - 1978 a group of quilters was formed to design & produce unique quilted goods & clothing. During the 10 year span of this artisan quilting cooperative group received federal assistance as an increasing trend in alternative lifestyles such as the back-to-the-earth movements. As the skilled quilting group attracted the interest of Sharon Percy Rockefeller (wife of John D. Rockefeller VI) who introduced the Mountain Artisans to Vogue editor Diana Vreeland & Oscar de la Renta.
