"Flower Power" is a term coined by Beat poet Alan Ginsberg, in 1965, as a means to transform Vietnam War protests into peaceful affirmative spectacles. Hippies embraced the symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colors, wearing flowers in their hair, and distributing flowers to the public, and became known as "flower children." This trend was taken up by the fashion industry, and flower patterns were incorporated in clothing and jewelry into the 1970s. Brightly colored enamel on metal flower brooches were worn by women young and old, but somewhere along the line, the symbolism got dropped. However, when recalling the iconic photograph from 1967, of a teenage hippy placing a flower into the barrel of a soldier's gun during an antiwar protest at the Pentagon, I like to imagine living in a world where the magic of Flower Power can prevent or stop war.
