1996 Inferno Handblown Glass Bowl (New Orleans // Artist: Scott Benefield)

The daisy murrine makes me smile and this bowl makes a great nightlight or mood lighting - just throw an LED light in there! This would be considered an early work by Scott Benefield from his time at Studio Inferno in New Orleans. Scott writes: "This piece was made shortly before I became seriously interested in mid-century modern glass, an interest that would shape the next 20 years of my practice. It uses murrine (the small patterned bits of color) that were fused into the wall of a bubble that had an underlay of a neutral, ivory-colored glass and then completed with a thread of glass around the lip. All very standard for hand production. At the time, we were trying lots of different combinations of color and shape, and if we didn't do well with one we would drop it from the line and try something else. I don't recall that we did a lot of the bowls." Scott's more recent work can be found in online searches and at his current studio, Benefield Spencer Glass Shop in Ireland.
