2 RARE ANTIQUE ORIGINAL PENCIL SIGNED TITLED ANNOTATED “ORIGINAL RAD” (IERUNG) (DRYPOINT) ETCHINGS OF SCENES OF ROTHENBURG GERMANY BY GERMAN ARTIST ERNST GEISSENDORFER c1930s
Titles (identify by the 2up image):
Top image: The Rathaus, Rothenburg OB Der Tauber (Rothenburg over the Tauber)
Bottom image: Plonlein in Rothenburg Tauber Germany
With the moon casting the only light, these night scene etchings are a study in midnight blue. These are not colored etchings but are inked with one color. Although Geissendorfer did many versions of these scenes, I have not been able to find any similar small etchings - produced prior to WWII - using blue ink, or nighttime scenes; most others are larger and hand colored.
For such small plate sizes, the handwork is especially fine and detailed and I believe this is called drypoint.
About the artist, ERNST GEISSENDORFER (1908 - 1993) was a twentieth century German postwar and contemporary artist, painter, and etcher. He studied art techniques in Nuremberg. In the decade of the 1930’s, he travelled and worked extensively in Europe and the United States. In 1945, he lived in Rothenburg and assumed control of the family art gallery there. While still producing fine art, he served as Town Councillor of Rothenburg during the 1960’s.
