The Hebrew word for dreidel is sevivon, which means "to turn around". A dreidel is a spinning top with four sides, each inscribed with a Hebrew letter:
Nun: (נ)
Gimel: (ג)
Hey: (ה)
Shin: (שׁ) or peh (פּ)
The letters form an acronym for the Hebrew phrase Nes gadol haya sham, which translates to "a great miracle happened there". This phrase refers to the miracle of Hanukkah, when a small amount of oil burned for eight days in the Temple of Jerusalem.
In Israel, where the Hanukkah story took place, the letter shin is often replaced with peh, which is short for po, meaning "here". This changes the phrase to Nes gadol haya po, which means "a great miracle occurred here".
The dreidel is a popular game played during Hanukkah. To play, each player puts a game piece into the center pot, and then takes turns spinning the dreidel. The player's actions depend on which letter is facing up when the dreidel stops spinning. For example, if the letter is nun, the player does nothing, but if it's gimel, the player gets everything in the pot.
