Variable chemical formula: (Mg2)(Mg5)Si8O22(OH)2 with other minerals occasionally showing up, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhoite. The iridescence in Nuummite flecks is due to thin layers if lamellae which are alternating fibrous mineral deposits of gedrite and anthophyllite. It is named after the area of Nuuk in Greenland, where it was found. The mines in Greenland are now closed. While small deposits have been found in Canada & Spain, Nuummite from Nuuk is still considered the gold standard and is considerably more expensive than its counterparts. Some consider Greenland Nuummite to be the only ‘true’ Nuummite rock specimens. It is the oldest stone discovered by humans on Earth and is approximately 3 billion years old.
