shari23114 @marlanap My deceased husband was of the African decent. Also I have a degree in fine arts and studied African art of which I especially love. I still study African cultures from all the different tribes, and religions also. I especially love the dyes and clothing. Let's face it I love many African things, oh and food too. I lived in the Caribbean for 10 years and I was called the " Gold Skinned African" by the local people. I tanned real dark lol. I've friends in African and have mad many open invites and it's been a lifelong dream to go there but never had the opportunity.

marlanap Wow, you have had some amazing experiences. I too am a widow by the way. A very, very long time. I am still looking for his replacement, not a replica. Just a nice man who appreciates cultural things too. Sorry about your loss. Somehow, your jewelry tells a lot about you already so that is why I asked my questions. I used to work at Cleveland State University long ago where Dr. Henry Drewal (who is not A-A) worked as a reknowned expert on African Art. He and his then wife (also not A-A who is an expert in African Dance) used to go to Africa to continue their scholarly work. I do know they are divorced now. While working there, I attended at least one of his lectures on his studies. My dear late mother introduced my 3 siblings and I to African culture when we were very young. While still in Cleveland, I attended many exhibits and lectures at the Cleveland Museum of Art so I definitely know a little about African Art and its origins. I have been to South Carolina to study the origins of A-A culture, definitely art. I love quilts and actually own a lovely authentic tapestry quilt made with Indigo Ink. An artisan from Nigeria made it. I purchased it from him while visiting St. Helena Island during my studies in SC (Summer 2003). I really admire what you are doing with your pieces. I too have never gone to Africa. But my oldest niece actually lives in Swaziland with her husband who was born there. She met him while doing missionary volunteer work in his country. I guess it was basically love at first sight because she made up her mind very quickly to marry him and relocate there. They have been married for a little over 3 years now. So perhaps one day I will go visit them. I would love to do that.

shari23114 @marlanap What a interesting person you are. There's many African artists in England of whom I dearly respect. Have you ever seen some? Just now thinking of course you have. I really like the dying process using big kettles over and over again to get that tye dye look that you see in many textiles materials. Also the Clay and wood sculptures. I especially love the quilts of New York, Harlem. They have everyday life depicted in their quilts and are awesome. I love the stories that they tell. These folk art quilts are my favorites. I'd love to see a photo of the one you own. I'm a jack of all trades and can fix the brakes of your car , change the water pump etc. I knit, crochet, needlepoint, make clay pots, paint and can put up a fence chop wood, and build you a shed with a roof. I can do many things but Not a quilt. That's just so intricate for me. I made only 1 once and I'll never do that again! It was much to hard for me and I admire you. My problem is I can't follow a pattern, not for anything that I can do. It all spatially comes out of my head. I guess maybe mathematically I can see it and create it to the exact measurements it should be, but to follow patterns, o any kind of directions I'm super limited. I hated math while in collage and thank my God for my friends that just happened to be my professors too. Yes I know it's not very ethical but what the hey I needed all the help I could get as far as the math. That's how I see a quilt and don't want to wrap my mind around it. I'd much rather admire and appreciate fro afar. Whew I'm long winded and hope I'm not boring you to death. Lol

marlanap No, I am actually from Cleveland, OH. Relocated to AZ in 2009. I was part of a Kenyon College Great Migration Project for 4 years that involved 3 trips to SC. I treasure those summer trips by bus. 2 Kenyon Professors, 1 from Oberlin, and one from Cleveland State, not me, were the head coordinators. I was one of the Lead teachers who supervised the others. Both of my dear late parents came from the South though. Mom from Meridian and Dad from Tuskegee. 😊😊😊

marlanap I know famous quilter Dr. Marlene O'Bryant Seabrooke who was one of our mentors while I was in SC. I bought a replica of one of her famous quilts, "Roots and Wings." It is a tapestry that you can use as a throw or wall hanging. I have it hanging in my home office. She also came to CMA to lecture about quilts in conjunction with one of the quilt exhibits. Faith Ringgold came there too and lectured. I attended both of those lectures. Faith autographed one of her books for me too. I would love to quilt too, but probably lack the patience. Lol. It is pleasant sharing info with you. Maybe I will post the pics if the 2 quilts on Instagram? That seems like the best place. 😊

marlanap My mother was amazing! She was a very talented teacher and singer. But chose motherhood as her primary profession. She loved roses, horses, the National Geographic... All things of nature. She introduced us to so much culture: piano lessons, jazz, classical music, poetry, performing, African dance, photography, Life magazine, Architectural Digest, the love if wearing hats...the list goes on and in.... So Most of what I have pursued and accomplished in life I know I owe to her in large part. She was one of my best friends too. ❤️❤️❤️
