@redochre Glad you like her! I actually rehab bags but have never fully dyed a leather bag. If no one buys her in the next few days, Iβm using her as my guinea pig...lol.
Sheβll either be a beautiful black or designer trash. π
bwaverly
I dyed an Alexander Wang bag from grey to black using Fiebings. It worked perfectly, just be careful of the hardware and use a q tip for details. It even worked on the zippers.
kvcamp
@jadsdrew I LOVE YOU!!! I rehab bags but haven't dyed this type of super soft leather. Was your leather like this? And did you have any problems with the dye seeping through the leather into the lining?
Did your bag have suede trim? This one does & I've seen that you're supposed to use different dye for suede but it would certainly be a pain to use 2 different dyes.
bwaverly
@kvcamp I dyed the mini version of this exact bag, the Mini Brenda Camera Bag. The lining on mine was already black so I can't help you there but I used the same dye on the suede trim as well and it all turned out great! I used one quick coat of the sealant on top in addition to Fiebings black. For the zippers I just soaked along them with the little blotter tool and then went back and wiped the dye off the metal.
kvcamp
@jadsdrew Sweet! You're definitely the reassurance I needed!! I've watched videos & have been repairing for years but was afraid of dying. I already have the dye & topcoat & I know this bag looks sweet in black.
Worse case, if the dye goes through to the lining I'll just dye it also. It'll look better w/ black lining anyway.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
bwaverly
@kvcamp glad I could help!! It will look great! I've only ever dyed anything black but honestly it's worked well every time.
kvcamp
@jadsdrew I would dye my entire house black if I could. Black w/ pink & silver trim. My husband won't comply.
kvcamp
@everclaire13 Absolutely! Had planned to do it a few week ago but got busy w/ other bags. Iβll tag ya when I do it. β₯οΈπ
thekillerkitten
@kvcamp do you think you could dye ONLY the suede trim? I love the sea green/ mint color but the trim shows too much wear for my taste. I think I might love the bag with black trim though!
kvcamp
@thekillerkitten Hi there! I guess you could dye only the suede but w/ this type of leather (or any suede), you canβt use leather paint; you have to use leather / suede dye which is a lot thinner. My concern would be the dye βbleedingβ or even transferring from the suede onto the leather b/c itβs very soft & porous as opposed to leather on a structured bag. Long story short, I never say never when it comes to bag rehabs but itβs not a task Iβd feel comfortable doing myself.π
thekillerkitten
@kvcamp fair enough! If you're not configurable doing it I certainly wouldn't be π
mfairlight
Following. I'm so interested in y'all dyeing bags! Have you done tie dye?
kvcamp
@mfairlight Iβve done tie dye on canvas & various fabrics but would never try it on leather. What are you dying?
mfairlight
@kvcamp I haven't dyed anything, yet, but I'd love to! I don't know π€·ββοΈ maybe a jacket or purse, Just depends on what I find
kvcamp
@mfairlight Well, tie dye takes practice. Itβs βdip dyingβ (containers filled w/ water & dye). You use a separate container for each color. For your 1st tie dye project, you should use a white t-shirt & only 1-2 colors. Iβve done it once w/ decent results. Iβd advise scanning YouTube. There are a ton of tutorials.
For dying a leather bag or jacket, youβd use leather dye & usually paint it on rather than fully dip it. You can also use leather paint if you just want some color.
mfairlight
@kvcamp very cool! I'll check it out. I love leather & it's so cool to realize y'all are dyeing and can dye or paint it!!
kvcamp
@mfairlight Some types of leather are easier than others. You see a lot of people painting the trim on LV bags - Pink seems to be popular. I donβt sell LV so Iβll never do it but I did paint the trim on a Gucci Boston bag. It was white & I painted it brown. Totally forgot about that bag until now! Came out pretty good. I havenβt seen it in a while. Must be in one of my bottom bins. Iβll have to pull it out to sell. Iβll tag you when I do so you can see it.
mfairlight
@kvcamp Thanks so much! That's awesome! I am already considering what kind of project I could start with. Edges sound alike a good one.
deeeeegolden
You should definitely color this one black! I think it would sell in a heartbeat for you!
kvcamp
@deeeeegolden Thatβs been the plan for months...lol. I rehab so many bags - this one keeps being put on the back burner. Iβm also a bit cautious because itβs very soft, absorbent leather & the dye will probably deep into the lining (which I will then have to dye black with a completely different kind of dye...lol.
Anyway, Iβm awaiting summer so I can sit in the open air while my Rain Man swims in the pool. Less interruptions if heβs occupied. π
deeeeegolden
@kvcamp Iβm interested in seeing how it turns out! I donβt have a handy, nor creative, bone in my body, but I have a black AW bag that has some wear on the soft leather. His leather is so soft! Itβs great, but itβs just not a good durable daily bag! I know I told you I have quite a few students with autism, on all areas of the spectrum. And, I have a cousin, whoβs 24, and non-verbal. He signs, and is so ornery. Heβs my favorite person. lol.
deeeeegolden
@kvcamp My one student with autism was moved from the learning support setting to a more restrictive environment in the life skills classroom. He also has the worst case of ADHD Iβve ever seen! He is the best. I literally couldnβt get anything done because he was a runner, and he would make me laugh. I always say, Iβm so intrigued by autism, I just want to be in their minds for just one day!! In case you canβt tell, I love special education! Lol.
kvcamp
@deeeeegolden My son speaks (thank God) & never shuts up. 11 yrs old & very high functioning. Most donβt realize heβs autistic until he starts talking about his obsessions (toilets & drains). DONβT GET ME STARTED. Iβm a germ freak & it TOTALLY grosses me out. Iβve worn a bathroom key around my neck for 7 yrs. b/c he deliberately tries to clog EVERYTHING. Little sh*t. Luckily, he understands my sarcasm & cynicism. If he didnβt, Iβd be locked in a rubber room, I swear.
deeeeegolden
@kvcamp hahaha. OMG. Trust me, I know how they fixate on things. Let me just tell you, the last election I had 4 kids that would talk about it non-stop. I felt like I was on C-Span. I was so glad when the election was over. Lol. Thatβs great that heβs verbal. Itβs so hard to find sign language interpreters these days. I always tell kids to go to school to become one because they will make tons of money!
kvcamp
@deeeeegolden My Son was constantly secluded in public school & they actually shut his finger in a door & partially amputated it. Had to have surgery on Xmas eve, 2013. There are no words to describe.
The lawsuit was just settled (on a technicality & my lawyerβs poor representation of my case). I basically walked away owing money. My son is in private school now & doing well. Iβm hiring another attorney to sue the district again & my lawyer. LONG story.
deeeeegolden
@kvcamp Iβm so sorry to hear that. I donβt blame you for suing them. I hope you make a buttload of money. I know itβs not about the money, but they should have to pay. Luckily, PA is one of the best states for teaching and education in general. Itβs hard to find a teaching job in PA because we get paid well. 10 mins away in WV itβs another story.
deeeeegolden
@kvcamp Itβs refreshing to hear about a parent take an active role in their childβs education. You wouldnβt believe the amount of IEP meetings I hold where parents never come. Itβs sad!!
kvcamp
@deeeeegolden My Son walks around yelling, βTrump sucks assβ. Iβm not proud of the verbiage. The day after I watched the State of the Union, my Son had LOTS of colorful language at school. The staff raves about it at his PPT. Of course, I label my statements βallowed to sayβ & βnot allowed to sayβ.
He actually debates people because I raise him exactly as I did my daughter. Speak your mind, express opinion, donβt ague. Just debate & stick to your guns.
kvcamp
@deeeeegolden Iβm the IEP / PPT team nightmare parent because I know the laws better than anyone in the room.
Heβll have enough hurdles. Right now, I jump them....BIG. π
mswhite56
@kvcamp Can she be cleaned at the leather cleaners, or do you think because of her light color that it wonβt go well?
kvcamp
@mswhite56 To be honest, I donβt know. I do my own bag rehab work / leather cleaning. Iβm not sure what a pro leather cleaning service would do. I do know that it SUPER soft & absorbent leather (not sealed like typical leather). If ya read all of the previous comments, youβll see that Iβm planning to paint her black if no one decides to buy b/c the various leather cleaners I use wonβt work. A pro might do it but donβt know the cost. π
joange
This is a beautiful color! Maybe wait some time
before the dye! go, solid supportive ally mom, go !!
power to you !! πͺπΌπ§π½ββοΈ
joange
At the top of the bag, is there a zipper closure ?
thank you!
joange
@thecoffeegyrl
joange
whoops! i just found that top zipper info! π¦
joange
i am very interested in this bag. Can it hold much
weight- 10 or more pounds? thank you!
kvcamp
@joange I donβt have a way to tell how much weight it will hold but it is definitely a nice sized bag. The measurements are in the description. π
joange
yes! i like the measurements of this beautiful bag.
When it is convenient for you, would it be possible for
you to pack it with some weight, some books, maybe,
so that i can have a sense if it can hold more than
10 lbs ? i would really appreciate it! i have a serious
crush on this bag ! π¬ thank you!
kvcamp
@joange To be honest, I donβt think it would be a very good book bag. Itβs not a thick, strong / stiff leather. Itβs very soft & would likely stretch & possibly tear if you tried to use it with large, pointy books.
joange
When i wrote my previous message to you, i actually
had the same thoughts about the pointy edges on
the leather !! i wonβt be using it for books, but i do
haul around a bunch of stuff and am hoping that
this bag can hold about 10 lbs. Would it be possible
for you to pack it with some (soft) items that together
weigh about 8 lbs ? thank you ! i really like this bag!
kvcamp
@joange Iβll see what I can put together. Iβll grab a bunch of things you might carry in your bag & photograph everything that easily fits. Howβs that sound?
joange
sounds like a very good plan! i seriously appreciate you doing this ! thank you !! π·π§π½ββοΈ
joange
re: true color- are the photos really close to the
everyday color ? the color of the top tie looks a bit
less vibrant, a bit paler, so i am just double checking
that the other color photos are really close to the
βtrueβ color! π¬ thank you!!
kvcamp
@joange The tie is the actual color. I brightened the other pics in order to show the soil on the bag. Sorry for the delay answering. Weβre remodeling my studio (going on 4 months now) & itβs tough to find space to lay things out.
Iβm posting a message & photo to show what I was able to fit into the bag in a couple of minutes.
joange
not a problem at all ! i appreciate the update re: true
color, and your labors to show what the bag can
hold. thank you! π·
kvcamp
@joange The vertical zippers in the center front & back open to expand the bag. Without opening the zippers, I was able to fit what you see: Baseball cap, water, capri sweats, small Fendi, mini Fendi, cell phone wallet & black wallet. If you expand the bag, you can fit more.
The lighting in this room is different than the lighting I used when taking the original photos. The color is basically slightly darker & a tiny bit more green than Tiffany blue.
joange
!! thank you very much for what you have done to
describe what the bag can hold, i really appreciate
you doing that! i have to admit that i like more of
a green, so now i will keep pondering! What a
beautiful bag! thank you!! ππ¬ βπΌ
kvcamp
@joange No problem. Like I said it is more green. Iβm trying to think of something to compare the color to so you can think, βOh, I understandβ but itβs hard to even get accurate colors with my phone.
Iβm a professional photographer but all of my professional equipment is in storage because weβre remodeling my studio (which is for photography & bags...lol).
joange
So, you really know light and color ! i used to do
film lighting, so i have a sense of how elusive /
challenging recreating βtrueβ color is.
? between the color in the βtie photoβ, and the color
in the last photo, is one of them more βaccurateβ
to the eye? thank you, such an artful bag ! π«
kvcamp
@joange Okay...lol...you understand lighting. Thatβs awesome!
The one with all of the βstuffβ was in a room midday that faces away from the sun light (no blinds or curtains). It was on the floor about 3 feet away & 4 feet under the window. I had to brighten the shot because I didnβt want to use a flash (that can throw everything off even more).
Iβm going to see if I can find something online that is a good representation of the color.
kvcamp
@joange Okay. I added a paint swatch color that matches it as close as possible. I have an iPhone 7 Plus with the screen brightness set exactly in the middle of dark & bright. Hopefully that helps...lol.
joange
Thank you, thoughtful woman, π· for that wonderfully descriptive information of the type of light that lit
that photo !! very cool ! Natural/ real light is one
of the most difficult things to recreate, (i think).
Thank you for searching for something with a color
that is close to the color of that great bag!! π§π½ββοΈπ·
kvcamp
@joange Keep in mind that Iβm indoors under a yellow-ish bulb. It will be a lighter in daylight. Iβm on the east coast so daylight is long gone...lol.
joange
when you write βbrighten the shotβ is that with
a setting on your phone camera ? (i am a curious
person). I will appreciate any visual to get the
color tone, so, thank you! Also, please do only what
can comfortably work into your schedule/life, okay?
no rush ! βπΌπΎ
joange
my apologies- there was a time delay between my phone getting the information that you had listed, and my questions ! i do like that paint swatch color
a lot- hmmmm. thank you for all of your highly
descriptive information, i appreciate it !! π·
now- decision making. I will probably take some
days π’, but i will be pondering. β¨π€
joange
i apologize up front if i am bugging πππ you-
re: the paint swatch- is it quite close to the color
of your bag, as i ! LIKE ! that color ! thank you!
joange
because the tie looks like it has more blue than
that great paint swatch (is one of the reasons for
my question.) thank you ms woman! π·π«
ashread84
@kvcamp wicked pretty bag! I love your closet you have a few purses Iβm very interested in! Are you negotiable on price @ all? I might also be doing a bundle deal :)
kvcamp
@ashread84 Hi there! I always consider offers! π I just may be more flexible on some than others. If you decide to make a bundle, let me know and we can go from there. π
kvcamp
@joange I totally understand. The problem is, it really depends on the lighting & itβs hard to find the exact color. Itβs sunny today so I can take it outside in the natural light & take some more pictures. Iβll try to find a black background & see if that helps. All of my photography equipment (including backdrops are in storage while we remodel my studio but I may have a black sheet somewhere. π
joange
Thank you ! i really appreciate your efforts and
labors on this! π«
joange
I saw that another woman is interested in your
beautiful bag. When it is convenient, could you
post a photo that shows as close as possible to
real color ? i realize that you are working on many
fronts! (i was looking at another one of your bags,
and read the womanβs intensely moved response
to you sending a special item to her son. Very
beautiful living! πͺπΌπ·π§π½ββοΈπβ¨π)
joange
Re: tie, can it be undone and re-tied ? thank you
ms photographer π·π§π½ββοΈ mother woman !
joange
Hi there! i read under another bag that you are
sick with pneumonia and side affects, and you have your hands full. i hope that you are getting some
of your health back. βοΈπͺπΌ I am in no rush. π§π½ββοΈπ·βπΌ
kvcamp
@joange Iβm sorry but I really donβt think I can do any better trying to explain the color.
When I listed this last year, my intention was to only keep it posted for a little while & if no one wanted to buy it soon after it was listed, I was going to keep it & dye it black. I rehab bags & need to work on dying soft leather like this so I think Iβm going to keep it for now, dye it & see how it goes.
I think itβs the best thing for everyone. Iβd hate for someone to buy & not like the color.
joange
okay, i understand! maybe i will check back in
with you, if you havenβt yet dyed it, i will probably
buy it !! thank you for all of your energy on this,
i really appreciate it ! βπΌππ¬π«
joange
and if i bugged you, i apologize. I am dealing with
a health issue/ treatments, i have to be very careful about anything that i spend. i respect that this is
your work and your livelihood, and i am a very slow
shopper. βπΌπ
kvcamp
@joange No problem at all! I just donβt want you to get the bag & not like the color.
I totally understand yucky health stuff. My son has Autism & I have brain tumors. Weβre a couple of walking miracles...lol. πβ₯οΈ
joange
Ah, thank you! you are one strong persevering
woman, with a generous spirit. Although i know
almost nothing about functioning with brain tumors,
you seem completely unaffected in your brain
powers. π§π½ββοΈπͺπΌβ¨π· Your son seems to be thriving
and that is powerful! I will take my chances the
next few days- maybe you will still have the bag, and
maybe i can make the decision. π
joange
hi, ms woman, i am still considering this!
thank you! π§π½ββοΈ
passion4poshing
@kvcamp Hi hun, any chance you'd consider trading?
joange
uh oh ! i better hurry up ! π§π½ββοΈ
joange
sorry to bug you with this (color) ? is the zipper
a light green, rather than a blue ? thank you!
i hope that you and your son are having okay
days ! π
kvcamp
@joange Thae zippers are gold. The fabric around the zippers is basically a shade darker than the original color of the bag before it faded.
joange
thank you! so, the fabric color on the zippers is
more green than blue, is that accurate? thank you!
kvcamp
@joange It depends on the lighting. Weβre basically going back to the same color issue. The entire bag is an aqua color but some parts are slightly darker than others because the color has faded. The suede trim is soiled from general use. Since itβs very, very soft, porous leather, I canβt clean the suede without damaging the leather. Itβs not a new bag & it definitely shows use which is why itβs priced so low. The only way to get it one, absolute uniform color would be to dye it.
kvcamp
@passion4poshing If youβd like to trade it for your Tiffany pendant, Iβll add in the MJ tote I have. π
joange
i understand, and i appreciate all of your
descriptive info- i do. Still pondering. π·
joange
I truly appreciate all of your energy in your descriptions.
I hope that your trade happens ! Re: people who are
so bothered by your expressions that they βreportβ you,
( and this is not a totalitarian regime- freedom is expression is valued)- you are educating people.
cont.
joange
and you are modeling bold living. This can also have
the effect of adding a sense of βpermissionβ
that some reading may not have felt to honesty and openly engage with others around real daily challenges.
Thank you for your generosity! βπΌπππ§π½ββοΈ
joange
if the trade doesnβt happen, i will still ponder...
joange
To be very upfront with you, i am deciding between
a couple of bags, and am checking if there is any
flexibility in the listed price, or if it is firm ?
thank you!
kvcamp
@joange The price is firm. π
joange
okay, good to know!
joange
? is this going to be traded/ or no longer for sale?
thank you! you have been exceedingly patient.
joange
thank you for all of your patience, and really good
wishes with all that is in front of you! βοΈβπΌπ§π½ββοΈ
joange
I hope that you are healing up okay from your
dear tick surgery. What a drag ! I have a leather
treatment question for you: I have several (clogs,
satchel, sandals) natural vegetable tanned leather
items. Previously (on other bags/ clogs) i have used
a shoe store treatment cream...it left a darker color
tone, and a finish that i donβt like. Do you have
joange
any ideas for a treatment (from water marks, etc.)
that may leave a more βnaturalβ finish ? thank you
for reading/ considering my question. I know
that you are busy with a bunch oβ stuff !
thank you !! π·β¨
kvcamp
@joange Itβs really hard to say without seeing them. By your description, it seems as though the purse leather is very porous which is probably why the product you used darkened the color. You likely used a polish thatβs made for leather that has a bit of a sheen to it so your leather basically sucked up the product instead of βcoatingβ it. Since there are watermarks and / or stains on the others, the only option I can think of would be dying them. (Continued...)
joange
Thank you for your ideas ! the leather was not
porous- it was very firm, like saddle leather.
(i wasnβt very clear- there are no water marks, yet !)
so, i am wanting to treat the three before i use them.
kvcamp
@joange Itβs hard to know what to use on leather thatβs βflatβ or not a little shiny. Anything you use will most likely layer on top of whatever marks are already there & therefore, the marks will still show. Many products will darken leather that have lost their natural oils - think of it as the leather being thirsty. Itβs going to drink it up & hold it. Dye will likely cover marks but youβd want to go darker than the existing color to cover marks. (Continued...)
joange
But your feedback makes a lot of sense; i.e. the
product possibly being for a shiny finish. So, i am
searching for a product that will just seal/ protect
the firm/ hard, βsaddle likeβ leather. i hope this
description is coming across !! thank you for much
for thinking about my leather challenge- i really
appreciate it !!
kvcamp
@joange There are a TON of blogs & YouTube videos that teach about leather types. Iβve learned by watching & reading hours of them over years. Also trial & error - Iβve ruined quite a few bags by diving in before I knew how to swim.
A couple of suggestions: Go to a thrift store & buy something with the same type of leather & experiment after you do a bit of research. (Continued...)
joange
On second thought, i do not know enough about
leather to state that is βwasnβt porousβ ! It is very
firm, almost βhardβ leather, like an untreated natural
firm veg tanned leather. But very firm/ tight.
(if this helps to clarify!) thank you for your thoughts
about this !
kvcamp
@joange A VERY helpful thing for me was & probably how I learned the most was by buying a package of leather scraps from Michaelβs. The packs have a bunch of leather types & colors that you can practice on.
Tip: You can order ANY Amazon Prime item, try it & return it if itβs not what you need. I know it sounds sleazy but within 30 days, as long as itβs Prime, you can return the item - but you have to check the box that says βwrong web descriptionβ or βnot as describedβ....lol.
joange
( i jumped back in after the βcontinuedβ to clarify
the description of the leather!) β¨
joange
Thank you, ms woman, for all of your tips, insights,
and informed experience- re: different leather
finishes. Again, i realized that my description could
have been more precise: there is a very light βsheenβ
to these items (all very similar leather.) The dry
leather absorbing the treatment/moisture- something
like this, makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your time
and ideas. thank you !
kvcamp
@joange Just saw last message - firm & βuntreatedβ leather will darken easier but there are some that will just condition it. Depends on the type of oil in the product. You mentioned βsaddleβ type leather. Saddle soap will darken. Donβt use it. I canβt remember which wax is in it but know from experience, it will darken.
I would hit the internet blogs & YouTube. Try specifically looking for cleaning / polishing UGGS or Birkenstocks. Sounds like your type of leather.
joange
thank you ! again, my description was not very
clear. Untreated, as in βnatural leather, and not
dyed. But it is VERY smooth, firm, βhardβ leather.
Like a slab of veg tanned leather from a leather
store, if this makes sense? thank you !
joange
and, yeah, i really agree about the saddle soap,
for me, it has both really darkened, AND left a
very flat, βdustyβ appearance. a mistake when
i used it. again, thank you ! ? are you a bit better
from your tic- bite treatment? i hope so ! π«πͺπΌ
kvcamp
@joange Hard to tell if Iβm better from the tick issue. 3 weeks of Doxycycline & I still have to go get tested for Lyme. The other problem is that weβre in Connecticut & this is the worst year in history for ticks. Iβve pulled 3 off of me since going on the Doxycycline. Itβs insane. We just hired a company to treat our entire yard but ticks are still impossible to avoid & I donβt even hang around outside. Iβm an indoor gal.
kvcamp
@joange Also - Iβm working right now (this minute) on a Prada w/ the same leather that you describe.
Very good tip - when using liquid polish (which is ALWAYS easier), get an assortment of artist paintbrushes (for all types of paint). Amazon sells a good one (about $7.00). I take the bottle of whatever Iβm using & mash & squeeze the top of the bottle on a paper plate to get a puddle. Itβs easier to avoid streaks if you can apply w/ a brush it in a quick even coat.
joange
!! ay yay yay !! what a huge handful- pulling 3 ticks
off of you, when spending not a lot of outside
time...kind of overwhelming....arghhhh. I think that
there may be some types of essential oils
(minty ones- eucalyptus, peppermint) that ticks donβt like, and possibly the one that helps to repel
mosquitoes ( iβm blanking on the name- smells like
very strong geranium. Begins with βCβ. )
What a scary hand full,
especially with the summer coming.
joange
Re: oils... you put some drops in your palm, and
add a βcarrierβ, some unscented body lotion, and
cover arms, neck, body, exposed places. It is not
βtoxicβ like some of the repellents can be. Sending
you good protective wishes for an intense summer
ahead ! yikes !!
joange
heyπ , thank you for that very good information,
re: liquid, and the brushes !! it is always that
nerve wracking first layer, the speed run to cover
the leather without the streaks... thank you ! π·β¨
joange
!! Citronella, this is the oil that mosquitoes donβt
like. Probably a lot more online re: less toxic
substances you and your family might use,
especially your son, who may possibly have his chemistry (with medication) more sensitive to bug repellent stuff. π ππ¬
kvcamp
@joange I actually make lotions, laundry detergent & my husbandβs shampoo but Iβm VERY sensitive to smells. Iβve made various lotions that I can tolerate but with ticks, Iβd literally need to lotion up my entire body & head everyday. Not likely to happen.
The oils & repellents are great for people like my husband & son before they go hiking but honestly, no matter what I (we) do, weβre going to get ticks. Itβs just a matter of catching them before theyβve been attached less than 24 hrs.
joange
ahh...well, i am glad that the βstuffβ works for your
son and your husband. I didnβt know that within
a 24 hr time period, that there is a better outcome.
What a supreme challenge....ughhhh
i wish you a summer of fewer ticks to remove !! π§ββοΈ
kvcamp
@joange Thank you! Yes, the longer they are attached, the more likely the Lyme bacteria will be transferred.
We can actually send ticks that weβve pulled of ourselves to UCONN & theyβll test it for Lyme, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever & the 5 or 6 bacterium that ticks carry.
Unfortunately, it costs $100 per tick. Ugh!
joange
Good technology to be able to access, and what
a chunk of $$. ? i wonder if they will ever do a
βsliding scaleβ for the $100, or, maybe a group of
community members can do a group fundraise,
so that for all of us regular people who donβt have
an easy $100 to check the bacteria levels of each
tick- maybe a βgroup money potβ can be raised
via βGoFundMeβ, or something similar.
I have had some serious challenges, but nothing
like the plentiful tick situation. oouufphh...
joange
Maybe some big money people in N.Y. (or your
state) can be approached to donate into a fund
and it will be a tax deductible donation, so that
it is framed as a βgood works health projectβ,
something like that, so that there is an available
fund of $$ for people who need to check their
tickβs bacteria. It could be a project, even, for
school credits, for the person/ people who figure out
the fund raising/ who keep it organized.
joange
It could be framed as a public health priority, so
that people can have less stress about the
constant possibilities of being infected with one
of those life- altering diseases. Feel free to tell
me that you are not needing my βwhat ifsβ hehe !!
Again, i wish you a summer of many less tick
encounters !! π§ββοΈπ
kvcamp
@joange Yeah...it depends on the state. My parents live in Virginia & theyβll test ticks for free but I think itβs only testing for Lyme.
Iβd prefer having all of the bacterium tests because so many of the illnesses that are transmitted arenβt detected until someone is very ill.
Since the population of ticks is so high, all of the diseases need to be tested for. Itβs a serious flaw in the medical system. Our insurance wonβt cover tests for other tick born illnesses - only Lyme.
joange
I really agree- it is a very challenging flaw in the medical/ insurance system. It is awful to be one
of those people, who years later, finds that their
awful beguiling symptoms are a result of a tick
bite. Iβve known/ seen at physical therapy, etc.
some people whose lives have been seriously
messed with, on account of the one tick bite.
Maybe this year, that is going to be so heavy
with tick infestations, can possibly start some
public pressure
joange
to change the affordable access to having each
removed tick checked for the specific bacteria.
What a freakin headache !! ugghhh ! ticks away !
π§ββοΈβ¨π·π
joange
Consumer Reports has an article (dated June 2nd)
about some myths about ticks, tick removal,
transmission of bacteria, etc.
kvcamp
@joange Thanks! Iβll check it out!!
joange
You are welcome !
joange
Article dated Aug. 6th, New York Times- βAn invasive
new tick...β
joange
βis spreading in the U.S.β
kvcamp
@joange Thanks for the info. Iβm sure the ticks are already here...lol. Unfortunately, not much we can do about it. We live in a rural area surrounded by woods & do have our land treated but there are animals of all kinds running around. Impossible to stop the spread. π
joange
You are welcome! It feels a bit overwhelming- to me,
it would be. In the article, there is a woman who was
shearing a sheep, and became covered with more
than one hundred of the ticks. The vet, (?) or
researcher went to see her sheep
joange
and became covered in the first few minutes, by
uber many ticks- just from stepping into the sheepβs
quarters. I know that you mentioned that you are
very sensitive to scents. Donβt know if the lemon
eucalyptus that can be very affective would be
off putting to you. AuraCacia is a very good brand
of essential oils. Sounds beautiful were you are,
along with many ticks !
joange
where you are
joange
Iβm in California, above a canyon. There is a very
large western diamond rattlesnake that lives in the
yard. The fire captain told me that they are very
territorial- so this is the land the snake has selected.
I have been very lucky- at times, i havenβt been
looking ahead of me
joange
and iβve come within 5 feet of the snake. Each time,
the snake has been lounging, and didnβt move at
all. I just took a scorpion outside from the kitchen
floor. (A group of them came up in some plants
from Mexico.) So far, no problems. I think that
the ticks are probably more challenging!
joange
Hello ! i recognize that you are very busy w your
work and w momming, and i understand if you
do not have time to respond to this question:
the βmobileβ inner lining of beautiful larger leather
bag (i bought on Posh) has an overpowering perfume
scent that i am trying to eradicate.
joange
Iβve tried to counter it w essential oils (rosemary,
sage, lemon.) ? Do you think that if a douse the
lining w dry baking soda and leave it to absorb
the soda, that that could help to remove a lot of
the very strong scent ? do you know of other
odor cancelling substances (charcoal may be too
messy, but it may be a possibility.) thank you and
happy holidays ! βοΈπ«
kvcamp
@joange Iβm not too busy for questions like this....love to help. Donβt put any additional scented substances on it. By adding the oils, youβre actually locking in the odors - if the initial odor was in fact perfume, that also probably had oil in it.
There are a few options for removing odor depending on the type of lining.
You wrote βmobileβ lining. I havenβt heard the term before. What type of bag is it?
joange
Hello ! thank you, so much ! i think i probably made
up the term/ description, for a lining that isnβt sewn
in, or anchored in- i am able to pull the entire lining
out of the bag (away from the leather).
thank you for that important info re: not adding
any additional oils. It is a LAMB McGuinness bag.
Again, thank you for thinking about this !
kvcamp
@joange No need to thank me. Iβm not familiar w/ LAMB but I did a quick search to look at linings but didnβt see photos detailed enough for me to tell if they are silky or more like a cotton / poly blend.
If itβs a natural textile (silk, cotton), the oils absorb & bind to the fibers so the smell is a bit more difficult to remove. If the lining is polyester or nylon, the oils are only stuck to the fibers. Still not easy to remove but easier. What does it feel like? Is there a tag inside?
joange
The lining is one rectangular piece that i am able
to pull out and away from the body of the bag. It is sewn in very solidly at the top/ opening of the bag. π·
joange
the fabric is probably close to a tight canvas.
( it is packed up in a box, as the handles need
repair at their insert to the bag.)
joange
Sorry ! i didnβt see your message come in !
I am almost positive that it is a cotton fabric/ not
silky. and, (thank you) for looking it up !
very kind of you.
joange
I looked at the tag in another π bag w the same
lining- it only lists βleatherβ. The lining does have a
bit of sheen to it- a woven sturdy fabric. i looked
online for the makeup- havenβt found it yet, but iβll
keep looking and iβll ask several people who
buy & sell LAMB.
kvcamp
@joange Okay. Iβm pretty sure I know the type of lining. You can try the baking soda method. Iβm not sure itβll work but itβs not going to hurt it.
My suggestion would be to lay to lay the bag on a bath towel on the floor & pull the lining out. Fill in a medium Tupperware container w. warm water & use a non-scented deodorant soap. Iβve used Safeguard (only comes in bar form). Wet a washcloth, rub the soap on it & scrub the lining. (Continued...)
kvcamp
@joange Then, rinse the lining under warm at the sink. As long as the leather isnβt butter soft & βnakedβ, any water than runs onto the leather can just be wiped off.
Once you rinse the lining, put it back (w/ lining still out) on the clean part of the floor towel you used to first wash it. Then, grab a small towel (like a hand towel) & start rubbing the lining. Smell the hand towel & you should smell the perfume on it.
(Continued...)
kvcamp
@joange You may have to repeat this multiple times. You mentioned earlier using baking soda - Iβve never used it because itβs hard to clean powder off some fabrics but if itβs a slippery fabric, you can put the lining (thatβs still wet) on a towel or baking pan & sprinkle a generous ant of baking soda. Let it sit over night & when itβs dried, rinse off the baking soda & use a clean, dry towel to squeeze & wipe as much water off as possible.
joange
I really appreciate all of this very thorough information
and the very helpful steps for me to work my way
through ! although you said that i donβt need to
thank you, i sincerely appreciate your help to me !
sending you good wishes for some fine, and sweet
and rich days ahead !! πβοΈππ¦ (lucky duck) π²π
kvcamp
@joange Youβre very welcome. Depending on how strong the odor, you may need to repeat the process. Another thing you can try is called βZero Odorβ. Itβs sold on Amazon & itβs AMAZING. Itβs not cheap but IT WORKS! I tell people to buy it just to have around.
Before my dog passed, she had 2 huge pee accidents on my brand new bed, I saturated the spots & put a plastic garbage bag on top. The smell was GONE. The spot remained but NO smell. AMAZING STUFF!
joange
Zero Odor definitely sounds like a very good find-
i will get some ! Iβm familiar w βNatures Miracleβ
( for four legged pees) but Zero Odor is news to me.
I am glad that your sweet pea was up in your
bed w you, they make life good. ! Thank you for
your very good information !! π
joange
There is a Zero Odor Pro, commercial grade. ($25)
Have you used the βhouseholdβ form ($12), or is
the Pro the one that you have used ? thank you !
joange
mistake: household ($17)...pet ($12.99)
kvcamp
@joange Itβs definitely the βHouseholdβ one. My husband wears one of those one-piece leather motorcycle racing suits & itβs like $100 to have them cleaned - which of course, we canβt afford so he sticks the bottle in there & sprays it. Believe me - that thing gets stinky & thereβs no odor after he sprays it.
I used to use Natureβs Miracle but they changed it & it has a horrible smell now. Iβm super sensitive to smell & the Zero Odor only has a very faint, neutral scent that fades away.
joange
Thank you for that first hand experience and
information! Glad that it is the βhouseholdβ form
that is strong enough. I havenβt used Natures
Miracle in a couple years, and i didnβt know about
that change. Unfortunate, cuz scents can really
get on a personβs nerves. I guess because they
are such a fundamental sense. βπΌ thank you! β¨
joange
I had forgotten about being able to use bar soup
to prep/ pre-clean items, so thank you !
(havenβt gotten to the bag lining yet).
I think i remember that you make laundry soaps-
if you get in a pinch/ donβt have time, Biokleen
(i like the liquid form) is effective, biodegradable,
in unscented and βbarelyβ scented: grapefruit oil,
(possible addition of another very light citrus, as
cleaning agent.)
joange
can i bug you with a question ?
i just bought an item from someone, and in
addition to the
$6.79 shipping fee, there is a $6.49 tax charge-
iβve never been charged for a tax fee before-
is this a newer change in Posh policy ?
thank you for any information that you may have,
and i hope that you and your sweet peas are all
faring well ! π·
kvcamp
@joange Yup. Itβs a new thing. I remember seeing a notice from Posh about it but donβt remember what it said. I should probably pay attention to stuff like that...lol...but the last sale I had here was May 2nd & I didnβt receive any sales tax.
The big auction site automatically collects it on behalf of the seller for certain states (amount varies depending on stateβs tax rate).
kvcamp
@joange I should probably find out if Iβm going to have to declare sales on taxes next year. π€
joange
! thank you very much for replying with that
information, and so quickly - i really appreciate
you doing this ! From the little that i read after
i wrote/ asked you, it seems as though it may
apply to some states, and possibly not to others.
The seller included it, so it may be something that
you, the seller, has the option to include in the
final total. thank you ! β¨βπΌπ·
kvcamp
@joange Could be. They donβt give me the option. I just read that the auction site collects it & submits it directly to the state on the sellerβs behalf (if the sellerβs state requires it). In Connecticut, it applies to sellers that have sold at least $250,000 during the last 12 months. I definitely donβt fall into that category...lol
joange
well, that is some small blessing, i guess, to not
be in the 250,000 category ! π·
kvcamp
@joange Lol...Iβd rather suffer the $250,000.00 consequences. π
π
joange
i usually forget that for some people, that is
a βregularβ income!
joange
Today βApartment Therapyβ .com has a thorough
article about all the different ways to clean with
baking soda. It is a good distraction for this time.
βΆοΈ Iβm going to heavily sprinkle-coat the lining of that
bag with baking soda, leave it, then vacuum it.
iβll let you know how it works.
kvcamp
@joange Which bag?
joange
A L.A.M.B. bag- the lining has a heavy perfume
scent. Many months ago, you answered my
question re: how to remove the heavy scent- you
looked up, and then wrote the steps to wash the
lining. Then you wrote the info re: the spray your
husband uses on his motorcycle leathers.
kvcamp
@joange Ahh...yes. For perfume, you might want to do my baking soda thing. Did I explain how to do that? Itβs cheap. Like $10.00 in supplies. Just have to be patient.
I did a Gucci tote that had an entire bottle of perfume spilled inside.
joange
Whenever you might have the time to write what
the baking soda process is, i would really welcome
that information.π· It sounds as though your process
was successful with that heavy spill- yikes. thank you!
kvcamp
@joange It was very successful. It requires patience is all.
You have to get like one of those disposable aluminum turkey pans at the grocery store. Also need storage containers. Small enough to sit around the bag in the pan and one for inside the bag. You need a crap load of baking soda. Like 8 boxes. And a garbage bag....
kvcamp
@joange You sit the bag in the pan. Fill the storage containers like 2/3 full with the baking soda. Store brand is fine.
Put as many containers as you can (2/3 full) around the bag IN the pan. Put one IN the bag. Leave bag open.
CAREFULLY slide the entire thing into a garbage bag and tie the bag. CAREFULLY put it somewhere no one will touch it...
joange
I have the patience, and the smaller containers - iβll go get the aluminum pan, and the 8 boxes of baking soda.
Thank you !!
kvcamp
@joange Leave it sit for a few days. Pull the pan out of the garbage bag. Remove the containers of baking soda. Smell them. They should smell like perfume. If bag still smells, you repeat the entire process. It took like 3 weeks to get rid of the Gucci perfume but it was BAAAD.
I actually washed it in the washing machine first because it was CRUSTED with perfume.
kvcamp
@joange If you repeat the process, you use new baking soda in all of the containers.
joange
Thank you, very much, for all of that helpful info-
i really appreciate it ! My project is a milder
challenge than the crusty one that you neutralized.
Thank you !! π»
kvcamp
@joange Youβre very welcome!
