The majority of polyesters are not biodegradable, polyester fabric shirt you bought last season will not decompose for 20 years at best and 200 years at worst. Polyester is partially derived from petroleum, and the oil manufacturing industry is the world's largest pollutant.
The production of polyester uses chemicals, including carcinogens.
Fabrics like organic cotton, linen, hemp, lyocell, peace silk, and bamboo are among the few that are completely biodegradable.

What’s peace silk?
What about just silk? Thanks 🤗
s_gur
@bookmart silk is a renewable resource, can biodegrade, and uses less water, chemicals, and energy than many other fibers

It's very irritating that so many listings do not indicate what the garment is made from! If it's on a tag inside of the garment, then there's really no excuse. Please have the consideration to let buyers know what it is.

I should have said "listings on Poshmark"--not directing my comment at anyone in particular.

Hi! I love the message but this is a second hand site. Would you rather the polyester clothes be reused, or end up in a landfill?
s_gur
@maryefaith well, let's face it, with all pros and cons of the reuse of polyester it will end up in a landfill anyway, it is just a matter of time and a number of users. Reuse doesn't make it more biodegradable. The best idea here is to make manufacturers responsible for the recycling of their products. It will make them much more deliberate in choosing eco-friendly materials and much more innovative and eco-friendly. I am not even talking about people making their own choices and taking respons

@maryefaith When they’re washed, they shed microplastics into our waterways. Unfortunately we will have to slowly transition away from plastic clothing, even used.
s_gur
@decreehntr Polyester should be labeled like tobacco "Not biodegradable" and "Produced using carcinogens". This fabric is full of polycrylonitriles that may cause cancer, according to the EPA.

Even as a kid I hated polyester. So disgusting. Never comfy. Thank you for shedding light to others here. 🌎🕊💙🦋

I appreciate this post! Not to mention polyester takes 300-500 years to decompose. And the amount of even high end brands that use it and still try to charge consumers premium prices for plastic. Don’t even get me started on companies that try to rebrand it as “vegan.”

And feels so gross...!

And those polyester recycled water bottle “earth conscious “ sports bras and clothing your wearing when you work out and go out in nature?
Well they can leach BPA into breast tissue and other body parts. The fibers when washed are killing wildlife and making the otherwise healthy fish toxic to eat!
Thanks for the 1% back Patagonia doesn’t touch the mess your making with artificial fibers.$over What matters eventually every time

@stacyptakats thank you! 🙏

@shannonrae00 thank you. Please share if you support this.

@owlbaby8069 sadly you can probably just assume it’s polyester when the fabric material isn’t listed 🥲
owlbaby8069
@rachel_slade lol--you're absolutely right :)
