Sand or Tufa Casting is a generations-old method used by Navajo and Native American Silversmiths. The design is hand-carved into sandstone, creating a negative space where molten silver is poured into a mold. After casting, the piece is refined and decorated by hand. A single sand cast takes 3- 4 days to carve and lasts for only one or two castings, making this a fragile process practiced by only the most skilled artists.
