“Classic Art” by Galvano Bronze (electroplated bronze) nude man and woman circa 1916. This beautiful piece can also be viewed in Kuritzky and De Costa’s 2006 book, Collector’s Encyclopedia of Bookends, Plate 690, page 121. “Classic Art” is listed with a value of $300 in 2006. In the late 1880s, P. Mori and Sons created the first commercially produced art metal industry in the United States in New York City. While the science of “electroplating” dates back to early 19th century Europe, P. Mori and Sons was the first American company to develop and use a new process of electroplating called Electroforming as a large scale commercial venture. They used the term “GALVANO BRONZE” to describe their new process, and registered it as the trade name of their company. Condition: Very good condition for age. There are some areas with discoloration on the patina from age – but I think that just adds to the character! Also, mark on the back of the head of the male nude, but looks to be from manufacturing process. Size: The male figure stands about 9 ¾ inches tall including the obelisk, which has a 2 ¼ inch x 3 ½ base. The female figure stands about 9 ½ inches tall on the same sized obelisk. The pair weighs almost 7 pounds.
