The Rye City Hall (Rye was settled in 1660, became a village in 1904 and a city in 1942)
John Motley Morehead donated funds to build a magnificent city hall at 1051 Boston Post Road
The Rye Free Reading Room was founded in 1884 by a group of Rye citizens.
The erection of this building in 1913 allowed the library to move from rented quarters, and later additions provide for a full variety of services.
The Square House - built around 1700, was originally a farmhouse,and became a tavern by 1770 ( George Washington slept here twice). It was used as City Hall from 1904 - 1964 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It headquarters the Rye Historical Society and is maintained as a museum.
