Antique 1896 Royal Trade Mark Full Measure glass canning jar with square base, glass lid, and metal bail. This 128 year old canning jar from A.G Smalley & Co was patented on April 7th of 1896 out of Boston, Massachusetts and New York, NY.
This piece is a stunner, as it features curved edges, tiny encapsulated bubbles (as is expected with glass of this age), a large Crown, and bold print in its raised glass label design.
Two notable flaws are located at the lip of the jar where two separate chips have occurred. However, considering the length of life this jar has seen, it is still in excellent condition, and the flaws only add to its story. Each flaw is safe to touch, as neither edge is sharp, but rather smooth considering.
This jar came to me with a glass lid, but lacking the rubber seal, which is common as time and exposure makes the rubber decay. I am unsure if the lid, is original to this jar, as it varies from others online, and I am unable to maneuver the bail above the lid. However, the lid is of the same time period, as it also has notable encapsulated air bubbles.
This would be an excellent neutral display item to layer in to any antique collection.
