In a village in the north Indian desert, women sit together in a courtyard, drinking cups of tea, talking and gossiping while they work as they sift through piles of tiny silver bells, and colorful glass beads. They have formed a crafts collective, the barefoot College, where they create and sell strands of colorful prosperity hens. Scraps of fabric are repurposed and refitted to new use. Nothing is wasted here. This work has empowered their generation economically, giving them a social and political voice, enabling them to make vital decisions that influence the quality of their standard of living. In this region, people hang these little hens in their homes as a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
