Vintage hand-carved, hand-painted Dala Rooster from Nils or Grannas Olsson and co., Sweden circa 1950-60s. You’ve seen the horses: roosters (and pigs) are the less common animals manufactured by the Olssons. They are a folk art symbol of good luck and prosperity. This medium sized one in black stands at 17cm (a hair under 6 3/4” high).
The design and color are bright and beautifully intact overall and the body is solid, with some condition notes: there are a few chips in the wood (back of the head and tail as well as a little nibble on the base). Some paint fading and other signs of wear consistent with age. I think it’s perfect as is, but--if desired—one could mend it with either wood or wood filler.
Please see all photos and feel free to ask questions or request shots other angles. Measures ~6 3/4” H x 5” L.
< Note: Offers considered, but I am unlikely to accept lowballs as I’d be content to keep it 😊 >
Background:
These traditional figurines are beautifully hand painted and carved by hand from quality wood. They originated in the Swedish province of Dalarna. Because they are hand crafted, no two are identical! Grannas Olsson was the first to begin manufacturing the folk art horses in 1922; his younger brother Nils Olsson began his in 1928. Both factories are still active and renowned.
The writing on the label of this rooster is entirely faded, but—due to its shape—is more likely to be Grannas; the production date is estimated based on its style and content.
