Tradtional Amethyst is a deep purple hue, with a high concentration of iron. The more iron, the deeper the tone. Rose de France amethyst is a type of amethyst that comes in lighter, softer lilac shades than compared to standard amethysts, and it has a special property. Rose de France Amethysts are Pleochroistic, and to be officially certified as one they must be Dichroic, meaning to have two colors. In other words, they must be two shades (do you see the lighter band of color in the middle of the oval?) and display different tones, typically red or blue, depending on which direction light is shining through the gem. You see those "feathers" in the middle of the stone? When you look at the stone from the opposite side, they dissappear! They are only visible when viewed from certain angles, which I personally think is really cool! The designation of Rose de France is also to some extent a statement of quality. To officially be assigned this title, at minimum it must have SI Clarity and have a significantly lower proportion of iron. In comparison to common amethyst, which are not rare, these are relatively uncommon, making them somewhat rare. Both standard and Rose de France Amethysts are beautiful, and it's fascinating how the smallest checmical differences can create the most dynamic, stunning visual differences.
