Adolfo Sardiña
was born in Cuba in 1923 or 1933, depending on the source. According to a 1974 story in The Miami Herald, he “decided to become a designer as a 10-year-old orphan living with an elderly aunt who didn’t laugh when her always-sketching nephew said he wanted to go to Paris someday.” Escaping the Castro regime, Adolfo immigrated to New York in 1948 and found work as an apprentice milliner at Bergdorf Goodman. For about 10 years, until 1961, he worked for an independent hatmaker and was credited as Adolfo of Emme. Throughout those years, he became something of a Vogue darling. (Adolfo racked up more than 20 cover credits over three decades.) Then, with backing from Bill Blass, he established his own business in 1962
Adolfo’s specialty was the Chanel-like cardigan suit, two building-block pieces that could easily be interchanged or updated. Much of Gabrielle Chanel’s postwar success came from enthusiastic Americans, some of whom made room in their hearts, and wardrobes, for what journalist Margarita Fitchner described as Adolfo’s “Chanel illusion.” “Everything’s been done already,” he told Fitchner, explaining that his mission was to create “a feeling of Chanel, an illusion of her. If you hold up a Chanel next to one of my designs, you will see they’re not the same. MINE are more easy to live with.”
