The Venerable Avalokitesvara (Avalokiteshvara) Buddha / Boddhisattva
Avalokitesvara (Chinese: Guanyin, Japanese: Kannon) is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion and mercy, the most popular of Mahayana Buddhist deities.
He is the earthly manifestation of Amitabha, guarding the world between the departure of the historical Buddha, Gautama, and the appearance of the future Buddha, Maitreya.
Name
The name Avalokiteśvara means "lord who gazes down (at the world)". In Tibet, he is called Chenrezig, which means "one who always looks upon all beings". In China, he is known as Guanyin. In Japan, he is known as Kannon.

Avalokiteśvara is often depicted in many forms, including as a young or old person, male or female, human, god, or animal. He is usually identified by a small seated Buddha in his headdress.
