Is the bottom a zipper where you can store stuff, such as shoes?

The bottom isn't a separate zipper, just a different leather pattern, and there are small metal feet to keep it off the ground. There is a small zipper compartment on the side as well as zipper and open pockets on the interior. Overall dimensions are about 9 1/2" across and 17" tall for the main leather body, the top closure part gives you some more inches when it's full.
