Minted from 1883 to 1912, the Liberty Head Nickel was designed by the mint's chief engraver, Charles E. Barber. The shallow relief of the obverse design allowed for fast and efficient production. The coins wore so well that they could still be found in circulation until the late 1940's. The coin had an important flaw however, the original design never said that the denomination was five cents. The classic Roman numeral V was used up until the gold-plated version of the Liberty nickel started to be passed off as $5 gold pieces. The mint added the word "cent" to the original design late in 1883. This three-piece collection has three Liberty Nickels including one dated 1883 Liberty Nickel when the reverse had no "CENTS" and one dated between 1883-1912 with "CENTS" on the reverse. Dates on two of the coins will vary between the dates of issue (1883-1912). The coins are mounted on a colorful sleeve (5-3/4" x 3-3/4") and come packaged in a snap shut keepsake box with a certificate of authenticity.
