That makes it easier to zip and unzip yourself and personally I find that type of design more comfortable and secure than when the zipper goes all the way up to the edge of the fabric under your arm like often found in strapless dresses. But the downside is that you will probably have to first put the dress on over your head. I hope that makes sense.
