A handsome box in the form of wood and leather and opens up to a burgundy lined interior. This is in great condition, but please zoom in on the photos as they serve as part of the description.
Member of the influential and powerful house of Montmorency, he followed King François I in Italy where won fame; made governor of Novara (1516) and marshal of France (1522); honoured with the title of connétable (constable) in 1538 as a reward for his military success, but fell into disgrace in 1541 and only came back to public life in 1547; important role during the War of Religions where he was one of the leaders of the Catholic side (he was, with François de Guise and Albon de Saint-André, a member of the 'triumvirate'); captured at the battle of Dreux (1562), freed at the Treaty of Amboise (1563); mortally wounded at the battle of Saint-Denis, 1567. Had the Castle of Ecouen built for him by architect Jean Bullant (1538-55).
