This is an antique Richter's Anchor Box. A German, stone Anker Baukasten construction set, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880.
These classic and highly-sought building blocks, made of quartz sand, chalk, linseed oil, and dye, and pressed into hard stone blocks, were first introduced in 1880. The "original Legos"! Sets were sold in sizes ranging from just 17 stones to one that included nearly 10,000 stones. The sets were modular, in that a larger set could be made by combining several smaller sets. The stones are generally in good condition, with only one broken and most with slightly rounded corners, as is typically of a set that is almost 150 years old.
The sets each came in a walnut stained, varnished box with sliding lid and metal corners. This box is definitely showing its age.
The set sold for around $3 back in 1880, or the equivalent of about $80 today.
This is a very unique and special set, perfect for antique toy collectors or a budding scientist or engineer. Albert Einstein famously played with Anchor Stones as a child, and two of his sets sold at auction for $82,700 a few years ago!
Please review all photos carefully, and ask more questions as needed. I am happy to send more photos, and reasonable offers will be considered. Note that this set is quite heavy and will require a larger-than-normal shipping box. Size is approximately 15"x11"x4" and 18 lbs.
Your item may come in recycled packaging.
