Pillivuyt produced a variety of porcelain terrines inspired by the hunt and for serving game pies or pâté. The type of fowl or game poking it’s head out from the golden brown crust would indicate the main ingredient of the dish. A terrine is a French meat loaf similar to a pâté, made with more coarsely chopped ingredients, served cold or at room temperature.
Here the dish would be duck. This bird shows green neck, dappled feathers, and a yellow bill. The body resembles a baked outer crust.
Cleverly molded and decorated to imitate a pastry crust, this type of terrine was originally designed and made for royalty and nobility in the eighteenth century during one of Frances flour shortages. It was an ingenious solution for tarts and pies, without the use of pastry.
The terrine is made of Porcelaine a' fea (fired porcelaine) which is confirmed by the hard, glassy, white interior.
