The samurai class was abolished in Japan in the late 1870s during the Meiji era. After the abolition, the samurai were no longer allowed to wear swords in public and swordsmiths turned to making fine works of art, many of them dealing with themes of nature.
This exquisitely sculpted Japanese bud vase features a tapered bamboo shape adorned with three-dimensional leaves and one adorable snail. It measures 9 inches tall and is 1 7/8 inches wide at the base. The vase weighs 1.25 pounds and is in excellent condition for its age.
