Antique Civil War Era Brown Tooled Leather Top Handle Frame Purse Muslin Lined
Snap inside is stamped "Waterbury Fastener Company" - founded in 1812 in Waterbury Connecticut, the company produced stamped metal buttons for the U.S. military during the War of 1812.
Both sides wore Waterbury buttons during the Civil War.
The company changed its name to Waterbury Companies Inc. in 1944 to reflect its expanded product range during World War II.
You might think (as we did) that the metal frame inside the purse would be far more contemporary than the Civil War era; but surprisingly metal purse frames date back to the 15th century.
Item is in good pre-owned antique condition; some loss of muslin backing on underside of handles ; please see photos for complete condition assessment.
