This antique bloused bodice belonged to my friend, Christine, who is an avid collector of antique and vintage clothing. It is constructed of silk and crochet, with hook and eye closures. I would imagine it being worn over a long skirt made of the same silk fabric, although the Edwardian woman did enjoy her mixing and matching. It is probably the upper half of what was known as a "promenade dress" which, as the name suggests, was worn out to see and be seen. Accompaniments would be a large-brimmed hat, gloves and, perhaps, a parasol.
I would describe the silk fabric color as a rich plum, wine or burgundy. Decorative pleats are sewn across the chest in two bands, with a third band highlighting each shoulder. The elbows are gathered or ruched. The crochet and trim are in a cream, tan or beige color. The crochet is a loose weave over a fabric of the same hue. Fifteen inner layer hooks and eyes and sixteen outer layer hooks and eyes secure the front of the garment, with two more hooks and eyes for the left shoulder. (One of these hooks is missing - an easy fix.)
Condition is fair. The right cuff is disconnecting from the sleeve (another easy fix). There are armpit stains. The tops of both shoulders have disconnected from the body, and the left back shoulder is frayed. Lesser imperfections exist to a smaller degree throughout. Additional info/pics available.
