Absolutely stunning colonial revival green glass decanter with engraved sterling silver overlay. Made by Gorham in Providence, ca 1886. Round bowl with flat sides and c-scroll handle. Cork-lined lid closes secure with a bayonet fitting (turn to lock) and is engraved with an interlaced script monogram. Pictorial overlay depicting on one side Ye Olden Age Colonial fishermen in breeches and tricorn hats; on the other a man and woman in same period dress stroll companionably, a house in the background. Glass is green. Silver fully marked including maker’s stamp, no. S815, and patent year (1886). A really nice special-occasion piece.
Measurements:
5 3/4" W x 3 7/8" D x 7 3/4" H
1.5 lbs
Condition:
Excellent antique condition. Appears well cared for. Was clearly used at one time as there is dark sediment at the bottom of bottle and the cork in lid is dark in color. Silver overlay is in good condition and may have been polished in recent years, showing some patina, whereas lid and collar have more patina. Glass shows no sign of damage, no cracks and no breaks, but some small scratches near bottom (see photo.) Underside of bottle shows repetitive wear over many years. The piece is a firm weight and has no wobble. The lid closes firmly and the hinge is in great condition No other noticed blemishes or damage. Normal wear for age. Please see all photos.
