The Edo Period in Japan lasted from 1603-1868 and the country’s isolationist policies meant most of the goods produced during that time stayed in Japan until families started moving to the United States in the early 1900’s and brought their heirlooms with them.
This rare porcelain plate was made around 1800 and is most likely from the Arita region. It has a hand-painted scene in cobalt blue of rocks with ferns growing on them and a mountain range in the distance. This antique plate was sold by Gump’s in San Francisco and features its original Gump’s sticker on the back. It measures 8 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick. There are minor firing flaws here and there but no chips or cracks.
