Antique LE Smith Mt Pleasant Black Amethyst Glass Creamer & Sugar Bowl Setwith Scalloped Edges
Antique depression glass, circa 1920 - made in the USA by L. E. Smith - this black amethyst glass appears opaque but is truly a deep purple color, apparent when viewed against the light especially in the thinner area near the seams (as in last 2 photos). The Mt Pleasant style can be identified here by 2 particular markers - first, their ""edges may have a scallop pattern that alternates one large scallop, 2 small points, another large scallop, and one small point"" as is the case along the rim of both pieces in this set, as well as the ""shield pattern raised on the glass, usually arranged symmetrically on the piece. It’s this design that gave Mt. Pleasant its nickname, 'Double Shield',"" - here the shields are seen on the handle mounts and under the creamer's spout. Both pieces sit on a raised pedestal foot - just over 2.5"" inches tall, between 5"" - 5.5"" inches wide, with ~2.5"" inch diamete bases.
Beautiful antique condition, no real signs of wear or use - perfect for a collector yet still functional for coffee and tea service if you so choose. There are some minor manufacturing flaws from the mould, which are desirable elements that add to their uniqueness and help in identifying the year/batch.
