Rare left facing high relief cameo late 1800s early 1900s; natural shell, likely conch, cornelian or possibly angel skin. Ivory white & blush pink tones, translucent shell. Deeply and intricately carved. The grape & acanthus leaves in the lady’s ornate hair indicate she is a Bacchante, a mythic attendant of the Roman god Bacchus. Most cameos are right-facing, a few mm deep, making this piece doubly unusual. Stamped 10k and signed ‘Peco’, the delicate gold frame has dents. Please see photos!
