Antique children's Staffordshire transferware ALPHABET PLATE by Powell & Bishop. This charming collectible Victorian pottery plate has raised ABC letters around the rim, with transferware scene of little boys playing in the center, possibly a nursery rhyme scene. Lovely for display on your bookshelf or gallery wall.
This plate is a RARE surviving early instance of Powell Bishop (later Powell Bishop Stonier) pottery, manufactured between 1867 and 1878 according to the impressed maker's mark. The plate is in very good condition, with one small flaw that appears to be a production error, disclosed in the second to last photo. There are also a few inherent surface irregularities that attest to the early nature of the production process for this pottery which blended hand and machine manufacturing techniques.
Plate is 6.25 inches in diameter and .75 inches deep. All photos are of the exact item.
