Teardrop Pendant measures 2-3/4" length x 1-3/4”width with a very high relief. Could be worn on a black ribbon or chain (not included). Pendant is in good vintage condition considering age. Small scratch visible on right side. Dates from the Victorian era of 1860 - 1880.
VULCANITE (also sometimes called "ebonite") was made by combining and heating sap of the Euphorbia or Ficus trees from Malaysia with sulphur. First patented in England in 1843 by Thomas Hancock, followed by Charles Goodyear in the United States that same year, pieces made of vulcanite were almost always molded, not carved, and it was used extensively in making jewelry. (Gutta percha was rarely used in jewelry and is often confused with Vulcanite).
