An extraordinary find in amazing condition! Early Victorian black basalt vase or cylindrical holder, by Wedgwood, circa 1850s. This Jasper Spill Vase is decorated with two Neo-Classical, Greco-Roman tableaux featuring enrobed women in relief. These are likely muses — i.e., Clio, goddess of history, with a scroll at a podium, and Melpomene or Thalia, with the mask. The figures are separated by two appliqué tree & foliage groupings under a top scrolling foliate appliqué border. Lovely satin like finish unique to basalt ware.
AGE & MARKINGS: Made by Wedgwood in the 19th C, before 1860. It has an impressed WEDGWOOD backstamp on the underside as well as what appear to be a 4 and possibly a couple other potter’s marks.
SIZE: Measures 3 3/4” H. Diameter at the base (foot rim) is 2 1/4” and 1 15/16” at the mouth (top rim).
CONDITION: Excellent condition with only general and/or expected signs of age and use. No chips, cracks or defects.
