This chunky sweater from Aran Sweater Market, an institution of the industry, is from the Aran Islands of Ireland and is one of those pieces that are generational. This company has been making wool sweaters for 3 centuries.
The wool is in a large cable knit pattern with a large turtleneck and rolled edge sleeves and hem. The tag says XL, but would be a more traditional US size large.
Merino is one of the world’s finest wools and comes from Merino sheep and is one of the softest sheep’s wools you can buy. It also lacks the itchy qualities of other natural wools and is comfortable worn directly on the skin and naturally comes with built-in antibacterial and stain resistant qualities. Merino wool is durable and versatile. Aran sweaters are built to last through generations and Merino wool’s durability means that they do.
It is not advisable to wash an aran sweater in a washing machine. Washing wool sweaters in a washing machine can cause them to shrink, lose shape and wear faster. The best way to wash them is by hand with a gentle wool detergent. See Aran.com for handwashing directions.
Chest 18”
Length 23”
Sleeve 19”
Shoulders 17”
Condition The wool is in great condition. It is very tightly knitted. The right shoulder is very tightly knitted and a little misshapened (pictured). I suspect it will all loosen once hand washed properly, but make no guarantees. The first shoulder seam picture is the left side, the second is the right side that is super tight.
