Art Deco GLORIA Factory Anton Weidl Fine Porcelain Ink Well Desk Tray - 24k Gold
From the factory:
Dear Joan,
This is indeed gorgeous. Reseda is a type of porcelain that is thoroughly colored - color particles were added to the porcelain mixture before producing the individual pieces. In your case the color is celadon green. The gold details are hand-painted and look still phantastic. This is polite gold of 24-carats, the best gold you can think of since it contains genuine gold particles. The color can change - which is no harm, it can be repolished and regains its natural glow.
I honestly have never seen such an item before. I can only assume for what purpose it was made. In any case, it was produced before World War II in our factory then in Altrohlau - which is today in Czech Republic. The piece itself is about 90 years old.
All best
Birgit Weidl
After much research and help from the FB community and the factory itself I still can't know for sure what this gorgeous piece was made for. The consensus was a dresser tray with hair pin jar holder, but people had different opinions such as an ink well desk tray, ashtray with cigarette holder, tooth pick holder w/appetizer plate...What I do know is the designer is Anton Weidl, the color is Celadon Green(a gorgeous seafoam green blue). It is a extremely rare piece. The tray is 10" x 6" with the attached cup being approx. 3 1/2" tall with finial and 2 1/8" wide. Excellent condition consistent with age. No chips or cracks
