Arte Kuna Colombia Mola Textile Quilted Applique Embroidery Needlework - Duck 16½"x12"
Molas are an expression of textile art, whose elaboration technique is complex and exclusive to women of the Kuna ethnic group. It involves the superimposition of different layers of fabric that are then sewn together, like a mosaic. They feature a multiplicity of colorful abstract designs.
The molas represent the worldview that the Kuna people have of their inner and outer world. For this reason, labyrinth forms that connect with life and change are common. In fact, they start from an ancestral tradition that links the present, past and future, in a symbolic warp that is part of the daily life of their lives.
The molas reflect the forms of nature that surrounds them and includes them as a unit. These are also enriched by the creative contributions of the community.
It was the goddess Kabaya who passed this craft on to women, and this tradition has been kept alive ever since.
