Kaani Jamawar is one of the most beautiful traditional shawls of Kashmir Valley. Dating back centuries, this ancient art is one of the earliest forms of handwoven handicraft. Handmade in the Kashmir Valley in India, skilled weavers use a distinctive needlework technique to create the complex and intricate designs thread by thread. It is a time consuming and labor intensive form of weaving, as the rich imperial paisley motifs are created directly on the loom. Because of the flawless weaving and skilled needlework, the front and back of the shawl are equally stunning. On average, an artisan is capable of weaving up to one inch a day at the most, and because no machinary is involved, these stunning pieces take many months or years to accomplish. This particular design takes around two years to complete. In an attempt to protect its originality, the government of Kashmir has registered these shawls under the Geographical Indication (GI) Act. This prohibits anyone from selling similar shawls and patterns under the same name.
