This beautiful vintage BAKELITE dragon/sea monster 🐉 is a wonderful find! Since BAKELITE jewelry hasn’t been made in decades, finding any piece is always a small miracle; finding a dragon is like treasure! Ironically, in my experience, a carved BAKELITE dragon is the REAL unicorn! To give you an idea, I’ve got a collection over over 250+ BAKELITE pieces, and of them, only three dragon pieces — two carved dragon brooches and a pair of carved dragon earrings. They’re beyond rare and HTF! This one measures approximately 2 3/8” long, and features heavily carved bright green, very slightly marbled avocado BAKELITE. The metal findings are original, without any wear or rust and work perfectly! Perfect for rockabilly and true vintage lovers…a real dream score! Or, the perfect finishing touch for anyone who rocks vintage clothing and accessories. *All BAKELITE items have tested positive with Simichrome and either 409 or Scrubbing Bubbles, AND have passed the sound and smell test(s). As a BAKELITE lover, PLEASE be wary of a listing that reads something like ‘Bakelite?’; it’s very likely NOT. BAKELITE is easy, easy, easy to test! Ask me how if you need help — I’m always open to share information about BAKELITE!* Use AFFIRM to split your purchase into four easy, separate payments!

yore_and_before @upstairscloset: I’m something of a Bakelite addict! Started collecting with my granny at age 9, and I’m now 50! I thought to clear out some of my (and now her) collection, but I’m still buying more! 😂 Thanks for your visit! Angela

vintage2classic Very cool! I know the smell test, but not the sound test! How does that work? I enjoyed reading your experience with this collection. 🌻Lorri

yore_and_before @vintage2classic: Lorri, my apologies! Your comments got buried in my newsfeed and I totally missed them! First, thanks for the kind words! I love Bakelite — I started going with my granny at age 9 and I’m now 50, so I’ve built up a great collection. My plan was to pare down, and I’ve gone that, but I find myself still buying new things…lol! 😂

yore_and_before @vintage2classic: The ‘Sound Test’…and maybe ‘test’ isn’t the right word, because it’s the most nebulous way of determining if something is Bakelite or not; it’s just something that comes with experience. When you knock two pieces of Bakelite together, they have a very distinctive sound, a hollow, deep ‘thunk’ that only comes from Bakelite. If you hit Bakelite and lucite together, it’s a shallower sound, etc.

yore_and_before @vintage2classic: It’s just something you pick up after collecting and learning Bakelite — I wouldn’t say anyone could rely upon it alone to determine a piece’s composition. If you’ve got two Bakelite bracelets, try it! Knock one against the other, then do the same with a Bakelite piece and a different type of plastic. That’s the easiest way to learn how to ‘listen’ to Bakelite jewelry…compare it, and I think you’ll be able to hear it.

yore_and_before @vintage2classic: I’d say it’s something just used in the overall assessment, like weight is, for example. Typically, Bakelite pieces are heavier than their counterparts, but you couldn’t use that alone to guarantee what you’ve got us Bakelite. It’s just part of the determination process. When it comes down to rubber meeting the road, you still need to rely on chemical tests, like with Simichrome, and the hot water test to see if it’s got that strong smell of formaldehyde.

yore_and_before @vintage2classic: I wrote a novel here; I hope it makes sense! And thanks for swinging by; I love talking with others who share my appreciation of Bakelite! 🥰 Best, Angela

vintage2classic @yore_and_before Hi Angela! I understand what you're saying. I have collected vintage sewing machines. The enthusiasm when speaking of such is just a natural occurrence. Thanks for educating me some more. You have a fabulous and special collection!!
