It turned out, though, that they didn't have legal permission to release anything under their name, so it was quickly withdrawn to avoid any legal problems. Four years later, in 1987, a new version of Abbey Road was released worldwide, and was quickly panned by critics and Beatles fans alike. Why? Unlike the original release, it didn't come from a flat transfer of the master tapes. It used (Yikes!) a digital copy. In fact, the CP35-3016 (often called the "Black Triangle" version in reference to the label artwork) has less dynamic range compression and (consequently) less hiss than the officially sanctioned 1987 version.
