This is part of the glamorous 1950s' millinery fashions. This Juliet cap consists of a round stiff structure covered in black velvet. There is a narrow velvety red 'brim' that is barely noticeable at the front, plus a veil that can be placed on top of the hat or worn over the face to create mystery. There is a velvet band around the flat crown that ends in a strip the side, with a beautiful black ostrich feather. The inside is covered in elegant red lace, and there is a fabric covered wire "stay" at each side to keep the hat in place, and is hidden inside the hairdo. This is a very glamorous cap.
A Juliet cap is a small open-work crocheted or mesh cap, often decorated with pearls, beads, or jewels, and chiefly worn with evening gowns or as bridal wear. The cap is named after the heroine of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, who is sometimes portrayed wearing one.
Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves.Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble.
